House in Lugar Várzea I
Maia
1993

To live in a house is something very special because it is an intimate thing. The act of designing it also. To build two houses in the same place and in simultaneous is a big challenge.
The people belong to the same family, but they are different. As well as the program. An image of unity is intended, but of individuality also – it is necessary to cross languages.
Different languages that try to build a single body.
" The style doesn't count: What counts is the relationship between the work and life; the style is the result of that relationship ".1

The plot is narrow and long, with two fronts from where it has access.
The municipality rules allows the construction of three houses. The project contemplates two.
A granite wall that unites the two sides of the plot is drawn. It is a course.
It protects from the rain, that comes from the South, and of more indiscreet glances from the neighbors. The buildings are disposed along this wall / course.

The lowest house almost occupies the whole width of the plot. The other one, higher, distributes its program through three units that punctuate the course. In between there it is a space that belongs to both houses.
One , is like an object with a very defined volume landed in the plot. Inside the space is almost as one. The relationship that it has with the low bodies that complement the program  generates its external space.
In the other house , the external limits of the space are less defined.
The house is intersected by the granite walls that cross it. Interior and exterior become complementary under the plan of the covering that shelters that part of the plot.
Two ways of designing a house, two images that complete themselves giving form to a single idea of space.
