Patio / Marina Houses
Quinta da Barca

Esposende
1995 - 2001

This second project of a group of patio-houses located in the same site results essentially of the option for an different type of occupation from the one foreseen in the general plan, while possibility to turn clearer the articulation among the different programs of collective use located in this sector of the intervention.
In this sense, it can be affirmed that the redraw of this part of the territory has as fundamental objective the physical “extinction” of the constructions contained in it, as a way of accentuating the dynamics of the general composition.
The houses are only organized in a single floor and they are associated perpendicularly along the street that gives them access. The entrance course is established beginning from this street as a way of defining an alternated sequence in the association of the several units that constitute each one of the two bands–a rhythm that allows to identify the individuality of each unit.
This composition strategy allows the configuration of an interior patio where the entrance of the habitation is truly located. It is starting from this patio that the several compartments are organized by sequence in an immediate space relationship with another patio, wider, located on the opposite side to the access course.
The enclosure while expression of the house presents a double face: in the exterior, its surface in schist, reveals itself denser and strongly rooted in the soil; in the interior, its plastered white surface,  shows it as more homogeneous and more luminous.
On the outside, the house is a compact volume that almost nothing reveals of its internal space. Inside, interior and exterior space are found themselves into one space.
